Chin Implants
Post-Operative Instructions
- You may have tape over your chin. Let this remain in place until it becomes loose.
Then, you can gently remove it, or it will be removed in the office.
- Elevate your head on one to two pillows. Light ice compresses can be applied over the chin.
(Fill a bowl of water with ice cubes and use gauze pads or a wash cloth as a compress.) DO NOT USE AN ICE BAG.
- You may gently wash your face when the tape is removed. Men should avoid shaving for three to five days, or until
tenderness and swelling have diminished.
- If you have an incision on the inside of your lip, you should be on a clear liquid diet for 24 hours, full liquid
diet for the next 24 hours and a soft diet for five days. See our Plastic Surgery Guide and Checklist for examples
of diets.
- If you have an incision inside your lower lip, do not brush the lower front teeth for one week. Wash your mouth out
with salt water (one teaspoon of salt per eight ounces of water), frequently for the first several days
postoperatively.
- You may have absorbable sutures inside your mouth which are absorbed within two weeks postoperatively.
- You may have external nylon sutures under your chin which will be removed in one week postoperatively.
Men should not shave very close to the external incision for ten days.
- Soreness and swelling are present for several days. The swelling resolves as follows: half in two weeks,
another fourth in an additional month, and the remaining fourth in an additional one to two months.
