Ear Correction (Otoplasty)
Common Questions
Post-Operative Instructions
Sleeping on one or two soft pillows for several days will help to decrease swelling. Do not lie on your side.
Applying ice water cool compresses will help to decrease discomfort and swelling. These can be prepared as follows:
- Fill a plastic bowl with ice cubes, water and a shake of salt. Soak and wring out gauze pads or a
small wash cloth. Place these over the ears—10 minutes on, 5 minutes off—while you are awake.
- Ice bags should never be used against the skin, as the area may be numb due to local anesthesia and swelling.
Intense discomfort is highly unusual, but if it should occur, it can immediately be relieved by the doctor anesthetizing
the single sensory nerve located below the ear.
Children can return to school, and adults to work, 3 to 5 days after surgery. Lightweight glasses can be worn at this
time if they do not cause discomfort. You must refrain from contact sports for a period of 4 weeks, but you may resume
routine exercise in 7 to 14 days.
Most patients are extremely pleased with the results of their surgery.
