Ear Correction (Otoplasty)
Procedure
For two days prior to surgery, the ears and surrounding areas should be washed with Phisoderm to reduce the risk of
infection. Surgical correction takes one to two hours and is usually performed under a safe, light, general anesthesia
administered by an anesthesiologist. An incision is made behind the ear and the ear cartilage is then carved, sculptured,
reduced or augmented, depending on the particular case. Either absorbable or permanent sutures are used in the cartilage
to maintain the position and shape of the ear. The skin incision is then closed with a combination of absorbable and
removable stitches. While the patient is asleep, a long-acting local anesthetic is injected. This provides several hours
of numbness and prevents discomfort after surgery. You will also be given prescriptions for pain medication to alleviate
any possible discomfort and antibiotics to prevent infection. In ear lobe size reduction the incision is made at the
edge of the ear lobe at the junction of the front and back of the lobe.
