Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Procedure
The operation is usually performed under a light general anesthetic for your safety and comfort. In addition, a
long-acting local anesthetic is utilized in order to decrease any discomfort after the operation. This is performed
most frequently in the outpatient surgery facility.
The upper eyelid operation is performed by making an incision in the normal eyelid crease. This usually leaves a
very inconspicuous incision line when it is healed. The excessive skin, muscle folds and fatty bags or puffiness are
removed. If there is only the presence of puffiness or fatty bags in the lower lids, an incision can be made inside the
lower eyelid avoiding external incision. All eyelid incisions are closed utilizing very fine specialized plastic surgery
stitches, some of which absorb and others which are removed usually anywhere from five to seven days after the operation.
With lower eyelid surgery, a small painless safety stitch from the lower eyelid taped to the forehead may be used in
order to avoid any potential eyelid sagging for the first several hours after the operation. This is for safety, usually
is not noticed by the patient and is removed the next morning.
