Laser Treatment
Procedure
For the treatment of perioral lip lines, there is nothing like it in the world. Lip lines are removed in a
precise, rapid, bloodless fashion achieving excellent and permanent cosmetic results. Crows feet, lower eyelid
wrinkles and glabellar frown lines can be softened or eliminated.
The ease, rapidity and precision of laser resurfacing, along with lack of bleeding during the procedure make this
procedure far superior and safer than typical dermabrasion for the treatment of acne scarring.
The ideal patients for laser resurfacing are fair skinned patients with lip furrows, glabellar lines, crows feet,
lower eyelid wrinkles and acne scars of the type previously treated by dermabrasion. Darker skin types can be treated,
but the risk of pigmentation disturbances after laser treatment is higher.
The treatment with laser induces new collagen formation in the dermis postoperatively over a period of 6-12 weeks
enhancing the effects of the laser resurfacing procedure.
The CO2 laser does require a general anesthitic. The CO2 treated surface is covered with a gauze that is alloyed to
stay in place until the new skin is regrowth occures at which time the guage dressing turns loose on its own.
The laser relies on extremely high pulse energy delivered in very short pulses causing immediate coagulation of
small predictable volumes of tissue.
Dermabrasion is a time-consuming, clinically difficult procedure, which requires careful technique in order to avoid
complications. Even with proper technique, scarring, textural changes and pigmentary changes are observed.
Chemical peels have been used to treat facial wrinkles, however, except for deep peeling with phenol, all but the
finest wrinkles are unaffected by these procedures. Phenol peels are always associated with permanent pigment loss,
textural changes in the skin, and may have serious systemic effects if used improperly. Trichloracetic acid and glycolic
acid, although useful in certain clinical circumstances, are not capable of eliminating deeper wrinkle lines.
