Ear Correction (Otoplasty)
Common Questions
What can i expect postoveratively?
Following surgery a form-fitting dressing is worn around the head and ears for two days. A small rubber wick
drain may also be used for a day or two to decrease the accumulation of fluid and reduce swelling.
True pain is unusual but you should expect some swelling, discomfort, and bruising. Sleeping on one or two soft
pillows for several days will help to decrease swelling.
Once your dressing is removed, a sweat band must be worn at night and during active, waking hours for two to four weeks.
Sweat bands can be purchased at any sporting goods store and should feel snug but not tight. The thigh portion of a nylon
stocking can also be cut out and worn over the ears and head if more comfortable. Any non-absorbable sutures are removed
9 to 10 days after surgery.
The new size, shape, and sculptured appearance of your ears may not be apparent for several weeks until your swelling
totally resolves. During this period the ears may look slightly flattened or pushed up against your head. In some cases the
earlobes may also appear enlarged for a few days to weeks.
