Breast Reconstruction
Common Risks
These can be broken down into the medical and the cosmetic concerns.
The medical risks are those found with any breast surgery, that being bleeding, infection and the anesthetic risk.
The anesthetic risks run the gamet from cardiopulmonary complications to blood clots. The type of reconstruction may
dictate different risks, ie. a TRAM reconstruction has the risk of developing an abdominal hernia whereas a tissue
expander reconstruction would not.
Irrespective of the type of reconstruction a smoker has a much greater risk of complications with either of these
techniques as compared to the nonsmoker. This is due to the fact that nicotine decreases blood flow do to vasoconstruction
therefore gum and patch substitutes cannot be used before, during, or after the process of reconstruction as well.
With respect to the cosmetic risks this deals with the symetry between the reconstructed breast and the non-treated breast.
A relaxed droopy breast cannot be matched by reconstruction and as such it may need to be lifted and/or reduced for symmetry.
A NOTE ON SATISFACTION AND DISSATISFACTION
It is important that you work with the doctor to establish a realistic appearance goal. More than seventy items contribute to
a surgical result. And with aesthetic surgery, good results are nearly always achieved. When you are willing to reserve final
judgment for a period of six months to a year, our results are usually excellent and unparalleled.
Beautiful paintings and sculptures by world-renowned artists always have small imperfections, but these are rarely scrutinized.
Instead, one sees the overall beauty and mastery of the art. In order to remain natural looking, cosmetic surgery may result
in small imperfections only noticeable when closely scrutinized. To avoid these, the doctor would have to use techniques that
may distort the features. Instead, we use an artistic approach while maintaining your safety. We strive for a youthful, natural
look—the mark of an artist.
