Facial Peels
Common Risks
Over the last several years, improvements have been made in the procedure, making it safer and more comfortable for
the patient. In addition, the more conservative approach used today, called a light peel, gives better results. The
procedure is tailored to the individual patient by selection of the type of peel solution, the manner and depth of the
application, and the skin care instructions to be followed before and after the peel. In addition to the face and neck,
the arms and hands can be treated. The facial peel also can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures for
optimum results.
Probably one of the most frequently seen problems is that of being to conservative on the operators part, necessitating
an additional treatment in the future. The consequences of being too aggressive are depigmentation or scars. In that one
is at times trying to reach the same depth as a water blister, risk would include lighting of the skin, which in most cases
is what one is trying for in the first place, thinning of the skin making blood vessels more visible is a potential risk
and least likely is inducing cold sores that could cause scaring. Infection can occur if fastidious post operative care is
not adhered to as outlined. Rarely scaring independent of infection. Not a complication, but potentially lengthy, need for
addressement of post operative redness is noted.
A NOTE ON SATISFACTION AND DISSATISFACTION
It is important that you work with the doctor to establish realistic appearance goals. More than seventy items contribute
to a surgical result. With aesthetic surgery, good results are nearly always achieved. When you are willing to reserve
final judgment for a period of six months to a year, our results are usually excellent and unparalleled.
Beautiful paintings and sculptures by world-renowned artists always have small imperfections, but these are rarely
scrutinized. Instead, one sees the overall beauty and mastery of the art. In order to remain natural looking, cosmetic
surgery will result in small imperfections when closely scrutinized. To avoid these, the doctor would have to use
techniques such as pulling your skin tight enough to distort the features. Instead, we utilize an artistic approach
while maintaining your safety. We strive for a youthful, yet natural look–the mark of an artist.
